Description:

“Design me the perfect system that calculates things.  Oh and by the way, it needs to support 100 million users … with a mean response time of 1 second.  And it needs to be reliable with 99.999% uptime and monitored for problems.  And it needs to flexible enough for developers to make changes to the system on a regular basis.  And the code base should be designed to accommodate business changes over the next 3 to 5 years.  And we expect our users to grow by 5 times over the next 2 years.  Oh and we will be rolling out double the feature set we have today in the next 6 months.”

As the Staff Systems Engineer, you will be charged with creating the changes necessary to adapt to the rapidly changing environment.  With the lightning speed at which changes happen within the mobile industry, you’ll be designing a system that will anticipate the unexpected to stay one step ahead of the lightning.

Working within the Systems team, you will work with other Architects, Systems Engineers and Developers to arrive at a complete end-to-end design for key features that will achieve not only its functional requirements but the non-functional requirements of the system.  You have a passion and commitment to excellence; you see your work deliverables as a source of pride while balancing the pragmatic needs to deliver operational solutions under the time and resource constraints.  You will design, implement and deploy functional components, core infrastructure services and common utilities that will be the core toolkit that your peers will use and base their code from.

You will have access to the latest tools, technologies and a great team of skilled and talented developers.  You will be expected to take a leadership role to not only meet the requirements - but to exceed them.  You will work with the Product Manager and Engineering teams to refine the next generation features and capabilities of the features, define the technical scope of the project and keep a sharp focus on the delivery at hand while having an eye on the bigger goal.  Your real focus will be around going outside of the box to develop the best services for our customers - from key design decisions, implementation intricacies and on-going maintenance.  Communication of the design and design concepts are a large part of this role – as a design is only as good as how many people implement it effectively.  To you, documentation is not a necessary evil, but a key deliverable and a source of pride to ensure that the services are well understood and easy to use.  You will leverage your extensive experience in Software as a Service environment to develop design solutions to problems based on the existing and road map Telenav architecture.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the architecture and design effort to develop services within the Telenav infrastructure
  • Lead the architecture to design and implement core infrastructure services that addresses commonly used functionality to developers while addressing flexibility and performance
  • Refine business requirements into technical requirements - understand and communicate those effectively
  • Work closely with other Lead developers and Architects to harvest common patterns to define interfaces and infrastructure services
  • Develop design that fulfills functional requirements while proving scalability, performance and maintainability
  • Drive and communicate a cohesive design to team and peers for integration
  • Lead a team of developers by example - excellent code habits, disciplined unit testing and integration
  • Drive excellence and task delivery by leveraging Agile concepts
  • Acts a leader by integrity in work and respect for everyone

Requirements:

  • 7+ years of direct hands-on design and development experience in preferably Java, C++ or other Object Oriented Languages
  • 3+ years of leading a team of developers to develop and deploy a component or product
  • 3+ years of design and development of extremely high volume mission-critical applications and systems
  • 2+ years of development experience in developing external APIs and SDKs
  • 3+ years of architecture and design skills - OO analysis and Design Patterns
  • Superior disciplined coding skills - Java expertise and C++ experience
  • Superior skills in interface design for extensibility and portability
  • Superior communication skills in writing technical documentation and communicating designs
  • Strong skills in development for massive scale distributed multi-threaded environments
  • Strong database skills including schema design, query design and persistence frameworks.
  • Experience with running in a horizontally distributed Linux-based production environment
  • Proven ability to influence engineering peers and management
  • Languages:  Java, J2EE, C++, C, PL/SQL
  • Technologies:  XML, SOAP, REST, JSON, JMS, J2EE, Mobile development, JavaScript/Actionscript
  • Documentation:  Javadoc, UML
  • RDBMS:  Oracle, MySQL, Berkeley DB
  • Tools:  Eclipse, SVN, CVS, Ant, Maven, Jira, Bugzilla

Pluses:

  • Presentation Skills and good English writing skills
